Story and highlight viewers

Stories last 24 hours; highlights are the ones an owner kept. These viewers open both on public accounts without your name appearing in the viewer list.

About stories

Why stories need their own viewer.

They expire

A story is gone after 24 hours. A viewer shows what is live at the moment you look, and a highlight keeps the ones the owner saved.

They keep a list

A story is the one thing on Instagram that records who watched, by name, for 48 hours. A viewer keeps your name off it.

Highlights are stories too

Saved under the bio, grouped by title, kept until removed. Menus, prices and announcements usually live there.

The viewer list

What Instagram records when someone watches a story.

A story is the one place on Instagram where a name is kept. The list has a fixed life, and an Instagram story viewer works inside it.

  1. 1
    Hour 0

    The story is posted

From the moment a story goes up, every signed-in account that opens it is added to the owner's viewer list, one entry per account. An account that replays the story five times still appears once.

  2. 2
    Hour 24

    The story leaves the profile

The ring at the top of the profile disappears. If the owner saved the story to a highlight, it stays under the bio, and any visitor to a public profile can open it there.

  3. 3
    Hour 48

    The list closes

The owner can open the viewer list for 48 hours after posting, and then the names are gone. Saving the story to a highlight keeps the story, not the list.

Anonymous viewing

How an anonymous Instagram story viewer keeps your name off the list.

Four facts explain how it works, and the same four explain where it stops.

  1. The list is built from signed-in accounts

Instagram adds a name to the viewer list when an account that is logged in opens the story. A visitor who is not signed in has no name for the list to show.

  2. A viewer loads the story without an account

You type a public username. The viewer requests the public story and plays it in your browser. No Instagram account of yours takes part, so there is nothing to add.

  3. Public accounts only

A public account's stories are open to any visitor. A private account's stories are delivered only to followers the owner approved, and a viewer is not one of them.

  4. Replies and reactions need an account

A reply, an emoji reaction or a poll answer is sent from an account, and the owner sees the name. A viewer plays the story and sends nothing back.

Stories and highlights

Which stories a viewer opens.

Instagram has four kinds of story. Two of them open in a viewer.

Highlights are saved stories

An owner picks stories to keep and groups them under a title below the bio: menus, prices, trips, reviews. They stay until removed, and the Instagram highlights viewer opens them one by one.

Close Friends stays closed

A Close Friends story goes only to the people on the owner's list and carries a green ring. No viewer, and no visitor outside that list, receives it.

Timing matters

A story posted yesterday evening may be gone by this evening. When a story you expected is missing, the 24 hours may have passed, or the owner may have moved it to a highlight.

Story viewer order

What the order of names on the viewer list means.

People ask why some names sit at the top of their story viewer list. Instagram has not published how the list is ordered; these are the claims that circulate, next to what is known.

Myth

The names at the top are the people who visit your profile most.

Fact

Instagram does not record profile visits for owners, and it has not published that visits decide the order.

Myth

The list runs in the order people watched.

Fact

Instagram has not published the rule, so the order cannot be read as a record of who watched first.

Myth

A viewer can move your name up or down the list.

Fact

A viewer does not put your name on the list at all, so there is no position to move.

Myth

Watching a story several times pushes you up.

Fact

The list shows one entry per account and no replay count. Instagram has said nothing about replays and the order.

Who uses them

Four ordinary reasons to watch a story unseen.

Emma CarterChecking a maker
Example
The situation
Emma was about to pay a deposit to a furniture maker she found on Instagram. Recent stories show whether an account is active and what it is making this week.
What they did
She opened the maker's public stories in a viewer, saw work posted that day and a highlight of finished pieces, then contacted the maker by email.
Claire DuboisPlanning a weekend
Example
The situation
Claire was choosing between two guesthouses. Both post room photos and the morning's breakfast as stories.
What they did
She watched both accounts' stories and their Rooms highlights in her browser, then booked one, with no follow and no name on either list.
Daniel MoreauWatching his market
Example
The situation
Daniel runs a small coffee roastery and keeps track of how other roasters announce new beans.
What they did
Each Monday he watches four public accounts' stories through a viewer and notes launch dates and prices in a spreadsheet.
Lena HoffNo account at all
Example
The situation
Lena's running club posts route changes as stories. She does not use Instagram.
What they did
She bookmarked the viewer, types the club's username before each run and reads the story in her phone's browser.
Good for, not for

What a story viewer is for.

A story viewer is good for

  • Watching a public story or highlight without your name on the list
  • Checking stories before the 24 hours run out, with no app
  • Looking at a shop, venue or creator before you follow or buy

It is not for

  • Private accounts and Close Friends stories
  • Replying, reacting or answering a poll
  • Bringing back a story that expired and was not saved
How it works

Three steps, the same for every viewer here.

  1. 1

    Type the username

The public account whose stories or highlights you want to watch.

  2. 2

    Open the viewer

The profile opens in a new tab with the story circles and the highlights under the bio.

  3. 3

    Watch unseen

Stories and highlights play without your account; the viewer list stays as it was.

Private accounts

What stays closed.

Private accounts stay private on every viewer.

A private account shows its header and a lock to everyone the owner has not approved. No viewer on this site, and none anywhere else, opens the rest. The private accounts guide explains what is and is not possible.

Questions

Asked about stories.

Short answers. Each page in this section goes deeper.

Will the person know I watched their story?
No. Instagram lists signed-in accounts that watched. A viewer loads the public story without your account, so there is no name to list.
How long do I have?
A story is up for 24 hours. A highlight stays until the owner removes it.
Can I watch stories from a private account?
No. They are delivered only to approved followers, and no website changes that.
Do I need an account?
No. You type the public username; nothing asks for a login.
Ready when you are

Look first. Stay unseen.

Type a public username and open the viewer. No Instagram login on your side, no name on theirs.
