Instagram recent follows

See who a public account has followed lately: how Instagram orders the following list, what the top of it can and cannot tell you, and how two readings turn a hint into a list of new names.

Can you see who someone followed recently on Instagram?

Partly, on public accounts

A public account's following list usually puts newer follows near the top. Instagram shows no date on any follow and has not documented the order, so the top of the list points to recent follows without proving them.

Key points
  1. 1

The following list is the only public place to look for an account's recent follows.

  2. 2

Newer follows usually sit near the top; the order is Instagram's and undocumented.

  3. 3

No follow carries a date, in the app or in a viewer.

  4. 4

Two readings of a public list, compared, name the follows added between them.

What recent means

Recent means near the top, not a date.

People search for recent following on Instagram because they want to know who an account has started to follow. Instagram once had a Following tab that showed the follows and likes of the accounts you follow. It was removed in 2019.

What remains is the following list on each profile. On a public account it is open to any visitor, and it usually shows newer follows first. That makes the top of the list the best public clue to recent follows, and a clue with limits.

On a public following list you can see

  • Each account's name, username and picture
  • The accounts in the order Instagram serves them
  • A search box to find one name in a long list
  • A link to open any account on the list
  • The following count in the profile header
How it works

Check an account's recent follows in three steps.

The same on a phone or a computer, with no Instagram login.

  1. 1

    Type the public username

Enter the handle of the account whose follows you want to see. The viewer asks for nothing else.

  2. 2

    Open the following list

The profile opens with its counts. Open the following list: the accounts this one has chosen to follow.

  3. 3

Read the top of the list

The first names are the likeliest recent follows. Open any of them to see who they are.

How the list is ordered

What the order of a following list can tell you.

Five facts about the list decide how far its order can be trusted.

  1. Newer follows sit near the top

On a public following list, accounts followed recently usually appear first. That is a pattern people observe, and Instagram has not confirmed it.

  2. The order is undocumented

Instagram has not published how it orders the following list, and the order can shift between visits. A position is a hint about timing, never a timestamp.

  3. No date on any follow

Neither the following list nor the follower list shows when a follow happened. A viewer shows the list as Instagram serves it, without dates.

  4. Mutual follows are not marked

A visitor without an account sees no sign of who follows whom back. Opening both lists and comparing them shows the overlap.

  5. Unfollows leave no mark

When an account unfollows someone, the name leaves the list and nothing records the change. Only an earlier reading shows it was there.

Two readings

How two readings turn a hint into names.

The top of the list suggests. A comparison of two readings shows exactly which names were added and which left.

  1. 1
    Today

    Take a first reading

Open the public following list and note the names, starting from the top. On a long list, the first screens are where new follows usually land.

  2. 2
    A week later

    Take a second reading

Open the same list again and note the names the same way, from the top.

  3. 3
    Compare

    Read the difference

Names in the second reading and not the first are the follows added that week. Names in the first and missing from the second are the accounts it unfollowed.

Ways compared

Two ways to find recent follows.

Reading the top of the list is quick. Comparing two readings is slower and exact for the period it covers.

This account is private

Only followers the owner approved see the posts, stories and highlights.

The count is public

A private account's following count stays in its header for every visitor, so you can see that it follows more or fewer accounts than before.

The names are not

The following list is shown only to followers the owner approved. No viewer, site or app can list it.

A follow request is the route

From your own account, send a request. If the owner approves it, the list opens in the app.

Promises to the contrary

A page that offers the recent follows of a private account is not telling the truth. Leave it.

Who uses it

Why people check who an account followed.

Emma CarterFinding a maker

Daniel MoreauNew suppliers
Example
The situation

Claire DuboisA collaboration coming
Example
The situation

Lena HoffA gig list
Example
The situation
Lena follows a band's public account and wanted to know which venues it was in touch with.
What they did
She checked the top of its following list before each season and found two venues near her.
Can and cannot

What reading recent follows is for.

Reading recent follows can

  • Read a public account's following list without an account
  • See the likeliest recent follows at the top
  • Name the follows added between two readings
  • Open any account on the list

It cannot

  • Show the date of a follow
  • Prove that the top names are the newest
  • Show a private account's following list
  • Show accounts someone looks at without following them
Quick answers

Smaller questions about recent follows.

Does the top of the list show who they follow most closely?

No. The list records a follow and nothing else: not how often they look, like or message.

Why do some names show no posts?

They may be new accounts, accounts that only follow, or private accounts. A private account on a list shows its name and picture only.

Can I see recent follows on a phone?

Yes. The viewer runs in the browser on an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer.

Stay safe

Three rules when you read someone's follows.

Never type your Instagram password

Reading a public following list needs a username and nothing else. A page that asks for your login is after your account.

A list of follows and nothing more

People follow shops, venues and public figures they have never met. A following list shows who an account follows; it says nothing about friendship or contact.

Leave it where you found it

Look at what the owner made public and leave it there: no messages or comments about a follow you saw while not following them.

Questions

About recent follows.

Short answers to what people ask about the recent follows of an Instagram account.

Can I see who someone recently followed on Instagram?
On a public account, partly. The following list usually shows newer follows near the top, so the first names are the likeliest recent follows. Instagram shows no date on any follow and has not documented the order.
Is the following list in date order?
Not reliably. Newer follows usually sit near the top, but Instagram has not published how it orders the list, so it is a hint about timing and not a record.
Can I see when someone followed an account?
No. Neither the follower list nor the following list shows the date of a follow, in the app or in a viewer.
Is there still a tab that shows what my friends follow?
No. Instagram once had a Following tab that showed the follows and likes of the accounts you follow, and removed it in 2019. The following list on each profile is what remains.
Does the person know I looked at who they follow?
No. Opening a following list is not recorded for the owner, whether the visitor is signed in or not.
Can I see who a private account recently followed?
No. A private account's following list is shown only to followers the owner approved. Its following count stays public; the names do not.
Can I see who someone unfollowed?
Not from one reading: the list shows the present. Two readings of a public following list, compared, show the names that left it between those dates.
Why is the order different from yesterday?
Instagram serves the list in its own order, which it has not documented, and that order can shift. Compare names between readings, not positions.
Do I need an Instagram account?
No. A viewer opens a public account's following list in the browser from the username, with no login.
Is this site part of Instagram?
No. UnseenProfile is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.
