Highlights are treated differently.
Highlights are stories kept on the profile. The notification page does not list highlight screenshots either.

Said, and recorded
The table above sets five things people say about screenshots beside what Instagram's help pages record. The notification page is the main source: it lists the activities that make Instagram send you an alert. Each row has its own section below, in the same order. This guide sits in the Stories section of the blog, with the guides on how stories, notes and highlights behave.
Story screenshots: not on the notification list

Instagram's page How notifications work on Instagram lists four kinds of activity that can send you a notification. An account likes or comments on one of your posts. An account you follow mentions you in a comment. An account starts following you or asks to follow you. An account tags you in a photo.
A screenshot of someone else's story is not on that list. Taking one does not create an alert for the person who posted it, on the page's own terms. The same holds for a screen recording of a story: the page names no activity of that kind.

People ask the same question about posts and reels. The notification page lists likes and comments on your posts as activities that send an alert. It does not list a screenshot of a post, a reel or a carousel slide. Saving a post to your own collection is not on the list either.
The page names who triggers each alert: an account that likes or comments, an account you follow that mentions you, an account that follows you or asks to, and an account that tags you. Each one is an action taken on Instagram toward you or your post. A screenshot happens on the other person's device and is not one of those actions.
Watching a story is recorded

The screenshot is not the part that leaves a trace; the view is. Instagram's help page on story viewers says the owner can see who has seen a story for up to 48 hours after posting it, and that only the owner can see that list. If you watch while signed in, your account is on it.

A story leaves the profile after 24 hours unless the owner adds it to a highlight. How Long Do Instagram Stories Last? The 24-Hour Clock follows one story through those hours, from the moment it is posted to the moment the list of viewers closes. Notes have their own audience rules, set out in Instagram Notes: Terms, Audiences and 60-Character Rules.
To watch a public story without adding your account to that list, the story has to be loaded without your account. That is what an Instagram story viewer does: it plays the public story in your browser, and the owner's list stays as it was. The anonymous story viewer page explains how that works, and where it stops: private accounts and Close Friends stories stay closed. Where a screenshot does show: disappearing photos in chats

There is one place where Instagram does show a screenshot to the other person: disappearing photos and videos sent in a chat. Instagram's help page on them says the sender can see whether the photo or video was opened, and whether the person who received it took a screenshot. Its page on replays says the sender can also tell when a received disappearing photo or video is replayed.
- 1A disappearing photo you sent
It can be opened, and after that it is no longer visible in the chat.
- 2Opened
The sender can see that it was opened.
- 3Screenshot taken
The sender can see that the person who received it took a screenshot.
The difference matters if you mix up a story and a chat. A story is shared to your profile's audience; a disappearing photo is sent to one chat. The screenshot status belongs to disappearing photos and videos sent in chats, not to stories.
Highlights

A highlight is still a story, kept on the profile. The notification page does not list a screenshot of a highlight, in the same way it does not list a screenshot of a story. A highlight can be watched long after the original 24 hours, for as long as the owner keeps it.
Checked on

Instagram changes features without a version number, so this guide records what its pages said on the day they were checked.
