Instagram Username Checker: Rules Before You Pick a Handle

Before you claim a handle, run it through three checks: the characters, the length, and whether it is free. Then see the list filled in for a real-looking brand.

Instagram username checker in three stages: characters, length up to 30, and availability
A handle passes three checks before it is yours: what it is made of, how long it is, and whether anyone holds it.
Key takeaways
  • A username uses letters, numbers, periods and underscores, nothing else
  • It can be up to 30 characters long
  • Handles are claimed first come, first served
  • A taken handle can often be varied with a period, a number or an underscore

A username is the handle after the @ sign: the part people type to find you, and the part that sits in your profile's web address. Your display name can be almost anything; your username has rules, and it has to be free. The checklist below runs in the order the problems show up: what the handle is made of, how long it is, and whether someone already holds it.

This guide is part of the Profiles section of the blog. If you are trying to find someone else's account rather than choose your own, the Instagram username search page covers searching by handle.

Stage 1: the characters

Stage 1: letters, numbers, periods and underscores are allowed; spaces, hyphens and emoji are not
Four kinds of character go into a username, and nothing else.

A username is built from four kinds of character: letters, numbers, periods and underscores. There is no space, so a handle made of two words joins them with a period or an underscore, or runs them together. Capitals make no difference to which account a handle opens.

Stage 2: the length

Stage 2: a username can be up to 30 characters; shorter is easier to type and remember
Thirty characters is the ceiling; most handles that work well are far shorter.

A username can be up to 30 characters. Anything longer is not a username, so a long phrase belongs in the display name instead. The limit is generous; the practical question is how much of the handle people can remember after seeing it once.

Stage 3: availability

Stage 3: search the exact handle; if a profile opens, it is taken
A search for the exact handle answers the first question: is someone already using it?

Instagram's help page on trademarks states the rule plainly: usernames are generally claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. So the check is a search. Type the exact handle into Instagram's search: if a profile opens, the handle is taken. If nothing opens, type it into Edit profile on your own account; the app tells you there and then if it cannot be used.

  1. 1

    Search the exact handle

Search for it in Instagram, letter for letter, with its periods and underscores.

    In the appSearch
  2. 2

    Open what comes up

A profile with that exact handle means it is taken, active or not.

  3. 3

    Try it on your profile

If nothing opened, type it into the username field.

A handle held by an account that looks abandoned is still held. Instagram's page on inactive usernames encourages people to keep accounts active, and its page on claimed usernames gives the practical route: choose an available version of the username, adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations.

Changing it later

A username is not permanent. Instagram's help page gives two routes: Edit profile on your profile, or Accounts Center, then Profiles. It adds two things to know before you change: on an account that reaches a lot of people the change may need a review first, and your followers may be notified.

A filled-in example: Maison Claire

Maison Claire's handle: maisonclaire is taken, maison.claire is free and passes all three checks
The same three checks, run for one bakery's handle.

Claire Dubois is opening a bakery called Maison Claire and wants a handle that matches the sign over the door. Here is the checklist, run on her three candidates.

Questions

01How do I check if an Instagram username is available?
Search for the exact handle in Instagram. If a profile opens, the handle is taken. If nothing opens, type it into Edit profile on your own account: the app tells you there and then if it cannot be used.
02How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters. Shorter handles are easier to type, say out loud and remember.
03Which characters can an Instagram username use?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces, no hyphens, no emoji and no other symbols, which is why handles join words with a period or an underscore.
04What if the username I want is taken by an inactive account?
Instagram's help page says you can choose an available version of it, and suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations.
05Can I take a username that uses my trademark?
Usernames are claimed first come, first served. Instagram's help page says some uses of a trademark in a username can be reported for infringement, depending on the context, and that not every use is an infringement.
06Will my followers know if I change my username?
They may. Instagram's help page says your followers may be notified of a username change, and that a change on an account that reaches a lot of people may need a review first.
